Large Format Hardcover, no apparent flaws, has a beautiful undamaged Dust Jacket, book and DJ are in Very Fine condition. Appears unused. The Dust Jacket is now protected by a removable high quality clear polyester Brodart dust jacket cover with a paper liner. The acid-free clear polyester will not yellow or crack with age. This is a heavy, large format book. Extra postage will be requested for Media Mail, Priority Mail and International mail. Excellent K2 and Karakoram history; includes an assault on K2 led by the Whittakers. In 1975 a mountaineering team of nine Americans, including writer-photographer Galen Rowell, set forth to scale K2, the worlds second highest peak, in the Karakoram Himalaya. Here is the classic first person account of that attempt, written with unflinching honesty, taut human drama, and keen insight into the motives that compel men and women to risk their lives in high altitude climbing. Over 200 photo illustrations 50 of those illustrations are in color. This book is both a history of K2 and early Karakoram exploration, and an account of the 1975 American K2 Expedition that attempted the NW Ridge. This expedition had some team friction and Rowell's account is one of the first climbing books to frankly discuss team politics and squabbling. The team members were Steve Marts, Fred Stanley, Galen Rowell, Fred Dunham, Leif Patterson, Dianne Roberts, Rob Schaller, Jim Whittaker, Lou Whittaker, and Jim Wickwire. Just like all of Rowell's books, the photography in this book is outstanding. Photos of both local culture and natural scenery abound. Mountaineering history of K2 is included and covers climbing from the earliest attempts through 1975. Books like this are valuable sources for researchers; Rowell includes considerable biographical information on the climbers: Aleister Crowley, Oscar Eckenstein, Duke of Abruzzi, Filippo de Filippi, Robert Bates, Charles Houston, Fritz Wiessner, Eric Shipton, George Bell, Jack Durrance, Ardito Desio, A. Compagnoni, L. Lacedelli, Paul Petzoldt, Reinhold Messner, Peter Habler, Hermann Buhl, and most of the other pioneering climbers of the Karakoram.
