London, 1938, 1st edition. 299 pp, 36 b/w plates, maps. Original black cloth hardcover with no dust jacket. Some internal marks, such as a partially removed library label, and overall the book is fairly well worn. It was probably read hundreds of times. The hinges have been repaired, and there is a slant to the spine. Incredibly the fold out map is still present and in excellent condition, with one tear taped. The term Good applies. This copy belonged to the Boots Book-Lovers' Library. Boots Chemists were and still are a chain of stores in the UK, that from 1898 to 1966 had a lending library in their stores. Eventually they would sell off the books. As libraries go they didn't muck up the books much, all books had a label on the front cover that always leaves a mark when removed, but otherwise I and many booksellers are reluctant to call Boots books Ex Lib, because they ain't. Boots had no library pockets, no India ink, no white ink used, no spine mark, no rubber stamps on title pages, plates and maps. This book was just read a lot, and repaired, that's all. Other than the label at the center bottom of the cover, you would not know it was a library book. You can just make out the mark on our image above, just below the .com of our watermark. A true classic of Himalayan exploration. Shipton and Tilman, with a very small and inexpensively provisioned party, mapped, explored and climbed in the Shaksgam region north of the Karakoram in 1937. One of the most desirable of Himalayan books. Bill Tilman and Eric Shipton organized the expedition in order to explore some of the highest glaciers of the world in the midst of the Karakoram. They left from Rawalpindi, at the time in India, and went through the Karakoram by the Sarpo Lago pass, 5684m, 18648 ft. In the next five months, they explored 5780 Sq Km, 2231 Sq Mi, of territory which Tom Longstaff qualified as being 'the mountain fortress most difficult on earth'. They reached the foot of the impressive north side of K2 and made a detailed map of that area of Chinese Turkestan, today Xhin Yang. Eric Shipton, who knew the lovely landscapes of the Asian mountains, was thrilled with the Trango glacier and exclaimed "Enormous columns of granite carried these elegant summits, so far away and out of reach, they didn't seem to be part of the colossal structures. The sides of these mountains, covered with ice and soft snow, shine like millions of diamonds in the morning sun." When Bill Tilman explored the Snow Lake at the bottom of the Hispar glacier in 1937, he noticed footsteps that he thought those of a Yeti. At the end of this expedition, Eric Shipman wrote Blank on the Map, a best seller. He became fascinated by this region of the world which, according to him, was the most fantastic mountain area on earth.
