In 1987, Roger Marshall, who was kicked off the 1982 expedition and promoted himself as the 'bad boy' of Canadian mountaineering, died during a daring attempt to climb the mountain solo. Barry Blanchard, who came close to the top in 1986, attempted Everest with just one other climber in 1988.
