Detailed Product Description
The Saturday Evening Post was one of America's great photo and feature story magazines, along with Life Magazine and Look Magazine. It's influence in the 1940s-1960s was as great as Facebook and YouTube are today.
Nick Clinch wrote this story of the expedition that did the first ascent of Gasherbrum I,
surveyed as K5 and also known as Hidden Peak, is the 11th highest mountain in the world at 8,080 metres (26,510 ft) above sea level.
When the Karakoram was first mapped, it was called K5. It was climbed in 1960 by this American team. Pete Schoening and Andy Kauffman were the summit pair.
All the 14 peaks of 8000 meters or higher were climbed in one frenzied decade, 1950-1961. Although Americans had attempted K2 and Makalu, this is the only one where Americans did the first ascent.
Clinch wrote a book about this climb, A Walk in the Sky, but it was not published until the 1980s as the publishers felt that there were already too many books about the Himalayas. Ironically Whymper was told the same thing in 1865 when climbed the Matterhorn, considered unclimbable, so he had to help subsidize the cost of printing in 1871. Of all the dozens of 19th century books on climbing the Alps, it is perhaps the only one still in print 155 years later.
