London, Macmillan, 1903 [1856]. 177 pages. Small hardcover, 7'' x 4 1/2''. In French but with an introduction in English, plus extensive English commentary in page length summaries of each chapter, it appears that this was an edition for English students as part of learning the French language. Bound in its original hardcover boards, with green cloth binding. Title on spine is in gold letters and is quite readable. The title is stamped on the front cover, but as it was not gilded or colored, it is hard to read, or even notice. A previous owner wrote extensive marginalia, which is mostly the English translations of unusual words in the text. As there are no significant flaws, such as damage of any kind, no foxing, tight hinges, minimal wear, we can call this Near Fine. Popular novel which was a great success in its time and which remains one of the classics of adventure novels for young people. It concerns the relationship of Greece, where the action takes place, and Turkey, which as the Ottoman empire had just recently been expelled from Greece, in real life and in the book. A handsome little book which due to its title probably belongs in extensive mountaineering book collections or libraries.
