48 pages, 1894 used and rare books. All our 120 catalogs were printed in one or two colors. But when we found the art we used for this cover we were told we may as well make a 4 color separation, it doesn't save much to not make a red negative. When we saw the color key we saw that was true, black, blue and yellow were all we needed. When we added the red, all it did was punch up the black a little. But this was the summer of 1993, and we were having some of the strongest months money wise of our career, so I said, go for it. We can always say we did a four color cover once. Color printing typically uses ink of four colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. As the press was running, the pressmen were tearing off signatures and opening them up for me to examine, and in the mean time filling up gaylords (Boxes that are 4'x4'x4' and fill a pallet) with scrapped catalogs. We could actually compare the printed catalog, the color key (proof) and the actual original art! And I remember clearly thinking, this is amazing. I have three versions to compare. And the best color is in the printed catalogs! Better than the original art from a German book from the 1930s. So we used the plate they made for the red, just for my pleasure at that moment.
