Catalog 5 was the fifth Catalog that Chessler Books issued. After this catalog we issued about 6 catalogs a year, until 2004. After that book listings were only on our website, www.Chesslerbooks.com. Our fifth catalog was very successful. We had been advertising in Climbing, Rock and Ice, Mountain and Summit Magazine, and had a few hundred names. We even advertised in the New Yorker for a few weeks. We had impulsively quit our previous job as a sales Rep for Sierra West and Gregory Packs, and had no idea of we could really make a living selling books. Catalog Five was 32 pages, printed in black ink only, the paper was a decent quality white paper that has not yellowed in the last 38 years. Finished size was 8 1/2'' x 5 1/2''. One special item we listed was a 16mm print of the movie The Conquest of Everest, the story of the first ascent. In 1985 video rentals were just starting, as was cable television. Collecting 16 and 35 mm films was a thing. Strangely, the copyright on this film has expired, whoever was supposed to renew it dropped the ball. You can buy it now on DVD for less than $5. And of course it is now free on YouTube. Catalog 5 was mostly used and out of print mountaineering books. There were 423 titles, and there were no images yet, although we had commissioned self addressed envelopes and order forms. In the mail order business this is called a response device. We continued to include order forms long after we had an 800 number and accepted credit cards, as just the appearance of the order form allegedly reminded the customer that as enjoyable as it was to read our catalogs, he should order something too!
