Catalog 4 was the fourth Catalog that Chessler Books issued. After this catalog we issued about 6 catalogs a year, until 2004. After that book listings were only on our website, www.Chesslerbooks.com. Our fourth catalog was very successful. We had been advertising in Climbing and Summit Magazine, and had a few hundred names. We had impulsively quit our previous job as a sales Rep for Sierra West and Gregory Packs, and had no idea of we could really make a living selling books. Catalog three was 32 pages, printed in black ink only, the paper was a decent quality white paper that has not yellowed in the last 38 years. Finished size was 8 1/2'' x 5 1/2''. Besides the books, we listed some loose tricouni nails, which I thought were ancient relics. Actually now in 2022 I believe they are still being made, and are used in boots for lumberjacks. We also had some great ephemera, letters and lecture materials concerning the 1933 Everest flight, and also letters from Frank Smythe to James Burton Pond, concerning a possible lecture tour. Pond was an impresario who handled famous persons such as Mark Twain, and exploresrs such as Adm Byrd. Wikipedia has a nice entry on him. Catalog 4 was mostly used and out of print mountaineering books. There were 353 titles, and there were no images yet, although we had commissioned self addressed envelopes and order forms. In the mail order business this is called a response device. We continued to include order forms long after we had an 800 number and accepted credit cards, as just the appearance of the order form allegedly reminded the customer that as enjoyable as it was to read our catalogs, he should order something too!
