The account of the Workman's first Himalayan journey in 1898-99. They explored Ladakh, the Karakoram Pass, the Biafo Glacier with Mathias Zurbriggen, who of course guided Edward Fitzgerald on Aconcagua and Mount Cook, NZ.

This was the Workman's first book and the production; choice of cloth binding, paper, size, etc, were not up to the standards of her UK edition, and her later books improved upon it. The US edition of the later books were printed and bound in the UK alongside the British edition.

The American husband and wife team were wealthy, zealous, and energetic explorers who together made many expeditions to the Himalayas. Fanny, a suffragist as well as a bit of a publicity hound, made sure the world knew of her achievements as a pioneering female climber. Among other achievements, she held the women's altitude record for 28 years after her conquest of 23,000-ft Pinnacle Peak in 1906.  This is the account of their first Himalayan expedition, 1898-99, during which they reached the Karakoram Pass and explored the Biafo Glacier.

'Account of their first Himalayan expedition, 1898-9, during the course of which they reached the Karakoram Pass and explored the Biafo Glacier. The first of several handsome books recounting their travels.' Yakushi W228. The Workmans were an American couple who traveled widely in the Himalayas, without the benefit of our modern equipment, as shown in some of the illustrations.

'The Himalayas are one of the most spectacular of mountain ranges in the world and form of dazzling chain of glory, protection and power to India. They provide a range of scenery that is rare in its variety-snow clad peaks, barren clags and cliffs, serpentine rivers, lakes and waterfalls. 'The present volume is classic travelogue through the Himalayas and takes a fresh look at its diversity.

The book seeks to capture the magnificent mountain scapes and the rich spectrum of cultures that have evolved amongst the people who live there. The formidable knowledge of the authors and their unerring eye for the telling detail have resulted in an excellent text which is superbly illustrated by the photographs. 'Short of actually visiting the ever fascinating abode of snow, this delightful book brings to the reader all the grandeur and colour of the Himalayas.'

Contents: Introduction. 1. Our Kashmiri Khansamah at Srinagar. 2. Tibetan Yaks. 3. Further wanderings in Gompa land. 4. The shady side of Himalayan mountaineering. 5. Greeted again by some old friends in the vale of Kashmir. 6. Skardu to Shigar. 7. Off for the Biafo. 8. Ogre camp. 9. Exploring in the Skoro La range. 10. Life at avalanche camp. 11. Koser gunge from the Shigar Valley. 12. Personal experiences with rarefield air, with some deductions for which the authors are separately responsible. 13. Alexander coin-Raja Sir Amar Singh. Glossary.

Fanny Bullock Workman (1859 - 1925) was an American geographer, cartographer, explorer, and mountaineer, notably in the Eastern Himalayas, ie, The Karakoram. She was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and usually travelled in conjunction with her husband Dr. William Hunter Workman. She was one of the claimants, in the first decade of the 1900's, of the women's altitude record, vigorously defending her claim against that of Annie Peck. Her claim was based on an ascent of Pinnacle Peak, a subsidiary peak in the Nun Kun massif of the western Himalaya. She is the co-author, with William Hunter Workman, of five mountaineering books, and several cycling books.
