Unidentified Press Agency, December 22, 1060. 8x10 inch original news photograph with caption and news clipping glued to back. Photo caption reads: "Sir Edmund Hillary and Khumjo Chumbi examine the scalp at London Airport today." Glossy press photo is a working proof, so is a bit bowed from the glue used on back and has surface and edge wear. Very Good condition overall. This photo was taken around the time Hillary took part in an expedition to seek the yeti or abominable snowman. The scalp was delivered by Hillary and Chumbi (headman of the Nepali village of Khumjung and guardian of the scalp) to England for expert examination. The scalp had been in the possession of the village for 240 years. The news story also mentions that the two, along with Desmond Doig, narrowly escaped death as they missed a flight booked on a DC-8 from Chicago to New York that crashed that week. We were fortunate to have met with Sir Edmund Hillary many times in the 1990s and 2000s. Being booksellers, we often asked him to autograph books by and about him. But we also brought along some other goodies. Edmund Hillary signed this photo for us about 30 years ago in Los Angeles during a fund raising event for the American Himalayan Foundation, to which we had contributed. The print is signed in blue ink. A note on Postage: If you are ordering just a Hillary photo (or several) to a US address, we will ship it by Priority Mail for $10.
