Chouinard's rock and ice climbing tools helped revolutionize climbing with their well thought out ergonomic design and high quality. We have an excellent example of his Alpine Hammer. The Third design hammer is the final design, and no major changes were made after this model. The major changes on the Alpine Hammer are in the teeth on the pick side of the hammer head. Prevois models had teeth near the tip of the pick, then the teeth were near the tip and near the shaft, and this final design has teeth continuously all along the pick. The hammer in Fine condition. The handle is lightly soiled from hand oil and dirt, but there are no scuff marks on the handle. The head is not battered, all we can see are some minor marks on the hammer side and pick side of the head, which may indicate very light use. If it was used, it was probably a one time event, otherwise we would see a lot more evidence of the hammer hitting pitons or rocks. The Logo and Chouinard Name in blue ink on the handle appears as bright as if it was unused. The Diamond C logo is actually clearer than on our other Alpine Hammer which is clearly unused. This example come with no leash, although one can be easily added. Postage is $15 for USA domestic Priority Mail postage, and approximately $35 for international Airmail. ALPINE HAMMER (From GPIW 1978 catalog) The Alpine Hammer is good for cleaning moss and ice out of cracks, removing nuts, placing and removing ice pitons, and chopping steps in close quarters. However, its special design feature is its use as an ice dagger for hard water ice. For this purpose it has a long, narrow drooped pick with teeth. Over the years the Alpine Hammer has gone through five major design changes. This model (1978) has a full set of teeth on the pick from the point to the shaft, for climbing waterfalls where the ice is often thin and the pick breaks through to water or air. This later model also has a beefed up the head to improve its balance and graduated the taper of the pick to make it stick better in brittle ice.
