Chouinard's rock and ice climbing tools helped revolutionize climbing with their well thought out ergonomic design and high quality. We have an excellent example of an early model of his Alpine Hammer. The intermediate design hammer has teeth near the tip and near the shaft, later designs had teeth continuously all along the pick. The hammer in Very Fine condition, really like new. The handle is not soiled from hand oils and dirt, and the original blue nylon webbing leash looks like new as well. The Chouinard Logo on the handle in blue ink is untouched. A small portion has no ink, which is from improper workmanship when it was made, close to 50 years ago. Postage is $15 for USA domestic Priority Mail postage, and approximately $35 for international Airmail. This will be reduced or combined if you buy other items from us at the same time. ALPINE HAMMER (From GPIW 1978 catalog) The Alpine Hammer is good for cleaning moss and ice out of cracks, removing nuts, placing and removing ice pitons, and chopping steps in close quarters. However, its special design feature is its use as an ice dagger for hard water ice. For this purpose it has a long, narrow drooped pick with teeth. Over the years the Alpine Hammer has gone through five major design changes. This model (1978) has a full set of teeth on the pick next to the shaft for climbing waterfalls where the ice is often thin and the pick breaks through to water or air. We have also beefed up the head to improve its balance and graduated the taper of the pick to make it stick better in brittle ice.
