London, 1908, 2nd UK edition, 2nd printing. 336 pp, 14 color plates, 23 pen and ink drawings and 11 photos. TEG. Royal Octavo. Large gold cloth hardcover with leather title patches on spine. Book has some wear and foxing and patches are scuffed and dark. Interior is in good shape. Near Fine. This is a large, heavy book. Includes chapters on the efforts of Tyndall, Whymper and others, and concludes with Rey's own ascents by the Zmutt and Furggen ridges. One of the principal books on the early history of the Matterhorn, written by wealthy Italian climber who knew and loved it well, it covers every face of the mountain, with histories and diagrams of many attempts both failed and successful. Thirty-seven illustrations almost as comprehensive as the text. Introduction by Edmondo De Amicis.
