In Imaginary Peaks she details the cartographical mystery of the Riesenstein Hoax within the larger context of climbing history and the seemingly endless quest for newly discovered peaks and claims of first ascents. Imaginary Peaks is an evocative, thought-provoking tale, immersed in the literature of exploration, study of maps, and basic human desire. The Riesenstein Hoax involved a 1962 trip report in Summit Magazine to an unclimbed range of soaring jagged peaks that had been unclimbed or even visited until the authors bushwhacked in and made several first ascents on the ominous big walls. It seemed incredible that a significant group of peaks could remain unclimbed and unknown in North America as late as the 1960s. Climbers across America broke out their Atlases and tried to locate the range. But when Fred Beckey, who had beta on every unclimbed peak worth climbing in the USA and Canada was unable to find it, the affair started to seem like a hoax. It made quite a stir when the hoaxers turned out to be three of America's best known climbers and wilderness explorers. The author has unearthed literally dozens of inaccurate and imaginary mountains throughout the world.
