This is the original Australian edition of the book published elsewhere in the world as MASTER OF THIN AIR. We obtained some original copies for collectors. The Australian publishers have been publishing many leading books as paperbacks only; this is one of them. Australia, Melbourne University of Melbourne Publishing Ltd, 2014, 1st edition. 354 pp, color photos. Trade paperback, Near Fine. The book has a Dewey Decimal spine label and an interior label, but is otherwise unmarked as a library book. Andrew Lock was the eighteenth person ever to scale all fourteen eight-thousanders, though he comes from the flattest country on earth. His preferred climbing style is in very small teams, mostly climbing without even Sherpa support, and without the use of bottled oxygen (except on Everest). His physical ability to perform at high altitude has been noted by other Himalayan climbers. The term "gritty" is often used to describe Lock, and he is noted for his understated and self-deprecating manner. Unusually for a long-standing high-altitude climber, Lock has lost no digits to frostbite. Master of Thin Air opens with a fall that the author very nearly could not stop down an almost vertical rock ramp leading to a three-thousand-foot drop. The qualities that saved him then on K2. In addition to his mountaineering know-how and sheer good luck drove his sixteen-year journey to summit all of the world's eight-thousanders, the fourteen peaks that exceed 8,000 meters (26,000-plus feet) and take climbers into the death zone.
