First ascent of Pik Communism, 7595 meters, the highest peak in Russia. An account of the Russian scientific expedition of 1933 which was the first to ascend this 7495m summit, the highest in the former USSR and now the highest in Tajikistan. The mountain was originally called Garmo Peak, became Mount Stalin in about 1932, Peak Communism in about 1962 and is now called Ismoili Somoni.
