New York, Frederick Stokes, 1910, 2nd edition. 373 pages, many illustrations - some in color, includes the often missing folding map. Bound in its original blue cloth covered boards, with gold letters on the spine and cover, and a red, white and blue flag on the cover vignette. Moderate edge wear on the cover, but otherwise a handsome copy of the most famous book in American Polar exploration. Robert Edwin Peary (1856 - 1920) was an American explorer who claimed to have been the first person, on April 6, 1909, to reach the geographic North Pole -- a claim that subsequently attracted much criticism and controversy, and is today widely doubted. This is the narrative of Peary's last expedition, 1908-09, on the ship Roosevelt, describing the passage through the ice of Smith Sound - Robeson Channel, the wintering at Camp Jesup, Cape Sheridan, north of Ellesmere Island, and the march on the Pole, which was reached on April 6, 1909. Peary's record was disputed by Dr. Frederick Cook, who claimed to have preceded him in 1908, but Cook's claim was disallowed, and many arctic scientists agree that of the two, Peary was the first man to reach the Pole. It will probably never be proven whether or not Peary was there or not. It is likely he got close and believed he did reach it. The consensus follows the 1989 conclusion of British explorer Wally Herbert that Peary did not reach the pole, although he may have come within 60 mi (97 km). Oddly, there are now many different record holders for reaching the North Pole, because there are many different methods of reaching the Pole. In 1969 Wally Herbert became the first man fully recognized for walking to the North Pole, on the 60th anniversary of Robert Peary's disputed expedition.
