Philadelphia, 1934, 1st edition. 255 pp, 29 b/w illustrations on 19 plates. This book has been very tastefully designed and we will described its excellent condition in detail. These illustrations use a low gloss paper stock that tastefully allows excellent detail on the images of Mont Blanc, the play and the people of the story. The binding uses a Navy cloth bound hardcover with gilt titles and no dust jacket. A portion of the DJ's flap description is tipped in on front endpaper. The book once was the property of a small town library in Maine, and the only marks are a neatly written spine number, and a rubber stamp mark with the library's name inside the front and rear covers, and nowhere else. There are no marks of any kind on the front or back of the many photographic plates. There is no external wear, no fading, soiling or darkening, bumps or marks on the book's edges and cover. Other than the neatly written Dewey number on the spine, externally the book is nearly flawless. This library must have had a good sense about the long term effects of library marking, and kept them to a true minimum. It is quite unusual but this book with its lack of marks and wear can be called Fine condition. Hardcover, 9'' x 6'', with no dust jacket. Book is bright and Fine. An exceptional copy. This is the principal biography of the climber and showman Albert Richard Smith. Smith made the 36th ascent of Mont Blanc in 1851, and other than the first ascent it may be said that his climb became the most important as it took his personal experience and created the recreation, sport and endeavor we now call mountaineering. The year after his climb he presented an illustrated live show in London that attracted and inspired many of the gentlemen and ladies of England and Britain to become climbers. Within 15 years of Smith's climb and presentation, so much alpine climbing ensued that every peak in the Alps was climbed, and the 15 years 1851-1865 was then, and now, called the Golden Age of Alpine Mountaineering. A modern comparison could be made to Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air, which was written purely as entertainment for the masses, but also inspired and supercharged the modern surge of Himalayan and 'Highpoint or Highest Peak' climbing worldwide. Wikipedia: In 1851 Albert Smith ascended Mont Blanc, and the year after produced at the Egyptian Hall a descriptive entertainment, which he called 'Mont Blanc,' describing the ascent of the mountain and the Englishman abroad. Smith's Mont Blanc show ran for 2000 performances over six years and helped to popularize mountain climbing in mid-Victorian Britain. He was one of the founding members of the Alpine Club in 1857.
