London, Longmans, Green & Co., 1903, 1st edition. 343 pp, 53 plates, map. A very clean hardcover copy, in bright and Fine condition. There ia a former owner's bookplate inside the front cover of one copy and a former owner's neat notation on the front pastedown on the other copy. The bookplate contains the name: Reginal Lawford Sharpe, the internet has several references to him as a serving officer in the British Army during WWI. On the second blank endpaper is a neatly written presentation, ''R.L. Sharpe, 5th July 1907, with all good wishes from Benson Lawford.'' There was a Benson Lawford who was the British champion in the One Mile in 1896. This was the same event that in 1953 and 1954 was run by Roger Bannister, setting the first under four minute mile mark.
Other than the plate and notation, the books have no internal writing, no stains, no foxing, no marks of any kind. The binding is firm and tight, and has not been repaired. Externally the book is not faded or soiled, the gray cloth is in its original color and condition. The gold letters on the spine and cover are bright. There is some slight rubbing on the edges, merely from sitting on shelves for 118 years. About as Fine as copies of this book ever are.
Neate says, "One of the classics of Canadian Mountain exploration and climbing."
