A rare moment in Gunks time: as of February 2025 we have two unused copies of the original A CLIMBER'S GUIDE TO THE SHAWANGUNKS by Art Gran published in 1964 by The American Alpine Club. New York, American Alpine Club, 1964, 1st edition. 155 pp, 285 route descriptions, 35 photos, 2 sketch maps. Red cloth hardcover, Bright and Fine. Previous owner's name neatly written on endpaper, else very clean. This book was not issued with a dust jacket. (Well it was, it came with a flimsy clear cellophane paper jacket that had no writing, and that may have helped keep the book clean if you never handled it, but it was prone to self destruct and most were correctly thrown away.) This is currently the most desired collectible rock climbing guidebook in the USA. Its humor, clear descriptions, good photos and air of confidence set the tone for many guidebooks to follow. The Shawangunks is the finest rock climbing area in the Eastern United States and is internationally known for its spectacular overhangs and wide range of excellent climbs in every grade. It is one of the few places where beginners and experts alike can climb side by side on routes of equal quality but opposite extremes of difficulty.
