The Steep Ascent is a fictionalized account of an actual flight event which occurred over the Alps. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's husband, famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, was flying the plane of that event. Mrs. Lindbergh herself was a noted aviator - she first flew solo in 1929, became the first American woman to earn a 1st-class glider pilot's license in 1930, and made many exploratory flights with her husband. "This is an explorer's book about a woman's reaction to the power and beauty of flight" - Atlantic Monthly And what was her husband doing in 1944 while Anne was writing a book? Despite orders from the White House to keep him away from the war, due to his isolationism, he was in the Pacific showing AAF and USN pilots how to lean out their fuel feed to get many more miles out of their airplanes, and just for fun he went and shot down at least one Japanese plane..... but nobody has really told the true story yet. Rumors say more than one.
