Detailed Product Description

New York, McGraw-Hill, 1959, stated first edition. 282 pp, b/w photos, mapped end papers. Hardcover with dust jacket. Jacket may chipped at the top of spine, book is fine. A very nice copy of polar classic. Fine

Perhaps the most exciting book to read that we carry! This account of Shackleton's shipwreck ranks as one of the most harrowing classics of the Antarctic.

In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton and a crew of 27 men set sail for the South Atlantic on board a ship called the Endurance. The object of the expedition was to cross the Antarctic overland. In October 1915, still half a continent away from their intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in ice. For five months Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways on one of the most savage regions of the world.

This utterly gripping book, based on firsthand accounts of crew members and interviews with survivors, describes how the men survived, how they lived together in camps on the ice for 17 months until they reached land, how they were attacked by sea leopards, had to kill their beloved dogs whom they could no longer feed, the diseases which they developed (an operation to amputate the foot of one member of the crew was carried out on the ice), and the extraordinary indefatigably of the men and their lasting civility towards one another in the most adverse conditions conceivable. This is a harrowing adventure and an extremely compelling book - a bestseller.

One of the great explorers who caused this period to be called the Heroic Age of Exploration. The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration was an era in the exploration of the continent of Antarctica which began at the end of the 19th century, and ended after the First World War; the ShackletonRowett Expedition of 19211922 is often cited by historians as the dividing line between the "Heroic" and "Mechanical" ages. During this period the South Pole was first reached, and much of the continent's coastline was discovered and mapped, and significant areas of its interior were explored.
