New York, 1914, 1st edition. 188 pp, 34 b/w illustrations, folding map. Cover bright, spine has been cleaned, lighter shade than cover. Internally Fine, externally Near Fine.
Tipped in to the front and rear endpapers is a magazine article from July 1942 describing the Army's famous 3rd ascent of Denali allegedly to test cold weather clothing and equipment. There are several photos included. Also tipped in is a b/w aerial photo of Denali 3 1/2'' x 5 1/2 '' with a notation 3205. It could possibly be an early Washburn photo.
Other than the cover color shift, and the tipped in material, the book would be in Near Fine condition. Overall Very Good.
There was a great rush to make the first ascent of America's highest peak. After several previous attempts, this describes the actual first ascent of McKinley. The Ascent of Denali is a narrative of the 1913 expedition of the first ascent of Mount McKinley. Hudson Stuck and his three companions overcame great challenges from extreme cold to explosive storms during their climb.
The Katmai explosion and earthquake in 1912 had left their route up the Northeast ridge a jumble of house-sized blocks of ice. Finally on June 7, 1913, the young Athabascan Walter Harper was the first person to set foot on the rooftop of North America. Stuck tells a compelling story complete with observations of the natural world through careful prose. Maps and high-quality photographs make The Ascent of Denali an irresistible adventure.
