Detailed Product Description
London, Smith, Elder and Co, 1913, 1st UK edition. Two volumes: 636 pp and 534 pp with photogravure frontispieces, 6 sketches by E.A. Wilson, 15 colored plates, 260 full page and smaller illustrations, from photographs taken by Herbert Ponting and expedition members. Plus Panoramas and maps, many foldout. Large format navy cloth Ex Lib hardcovers. This copy was probably read many times as there is a partial bookplate inside the front cover of Vol. 1 indicating it belonged to a lending library in London. There are no other Ex Lib markings. The overall appearance of the blue cloth is a little dull, not bright and shiny and Vol. 2 is missing the plate opposite page 296. A Very Good copy of perhaps the landmark book of Antarctic exploration.

In November 1910, a ship called Terra Nova left New Zealand on its way south to Antarctica. On board was an international team of explorers led by Robert Falcon Scott, a man determined to be the first to reach the South Pole. A year and a half later, Scott and three members of his team died during a brutal blizzard.

Their dream of reaching the Pole first had already been dashed by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, and now on their return trip--slowed by ill health and bad weather--Scott's party found themselves trapped in a tent without sufficient provisions, while the wind howled endlessly outside. Even in his final hours, Scott found the strength to continue the journal he'd started at the beginning of his adventures; the diary was found beside his frozen body.

Scott's Last Expedition: The Journals is the explorer's detailed account of his time in Antarctica. The team's daily progress towards their final goal is recorded in Scott's vivid, personal narrative, as well as his impressions of the harsh conditions, the stark beauty of the tundra, and his own increasingly desperate ambition to beat his rivals to the Pole.

Shortly before he died, Scott wrote: 'Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman.' Robert Falcon Scott and his men died, but their story lives on in his journals.

These two Volumes are large and heavy, so extra postage will be requested for Priority Mail or International Mail.

One of the great explorers who caused this period to be called the Heroic Age of Exploration. The Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration was an era in the exploration of the continent of Antarctica which began at the end of the 19th century, and ended after the First World War; the Shackleton–Rowett Expedition of 1921–1922 is often cited by historians as the dividing line between the "Heroic" and "Mechanical" ages. During this period the South Pole was first reached, and much of the continent's coastline was discovered and mapped, and significant areas of its interior were explored.
