London, 1916, 1st edition. 207 pp, 57 ills.Tall hardcover, No DJ, Fine.Tipped in the front of the book is a one page handwritten letter from the author, E.E. Durham, dated Nov 27, 1916, to a C.D. Holdsworth, remembering some areas where they had climbed. Durham also says he would like to visit the Alps again "when these troubles are over," referring of course to WW1 which was raging at the time. Holdsworth is mentioned in the letter, and he also signed his name in pencil on the front endpaper.
The book is an account of a British climber's active Alpine career from 1898 to 1914. Rev. Durham, Rector of Newton Abbot and Prebendary of Exeter, climbed extensively in the western Alps. He was killed in a rock-climbing accident on Tryfan in North Wales in 1921.
