Toronto, McFarlane Walter and Ross, 1992, 1st edition. 271 pp. Hardcover with dust jacket, Fine This is the story of the crash and rescue mission, when on 30th October 1991, a Canadian CC-130 Hercules military transport aircraft carrying diesel fuel and personnel from Greenland to the top-secret Alert listening post on Ellesmere Island. The plane crashed in the most isolated habitat in the world, the last ice-blasted spit of land before the Pole 450 nautical miles to the North. Miraculously only 4 out of the 18 people on board were killed, but the survivors were grievously injured and could not last long in the deadly cold. They were only a few miles from the military post and believed that help would arrive within hours. But a fierce Arctic blizzard set in and the rescue mission was complicated by the worst of the elements: perpetual darkness, extreme cold, howling winds, and white-out. Survivors and rescuers alike found themselves in a life-and-death battle against the elements. The book explores the massive logistics of the most northerly rescue ever mounted. Brilliantly reported by the author, an invesigative journalist who covered the crash and rescue, involving 26 aircraft including Canadian Military and Civilian Aircraft, and aircraft of the United States Air Force, for the Ottawa Citizen.
