Detailed Product Description

SIGNED on the front end paper by Tenzing and Ed Hillary

About The Signatures:

We owned and sold this copy of After Everest 30 years ago, and in 2021 we purchased it back from our old customer. Tenzing had already signed the book on the front end paper, most likely in Darjeeling where he lived in the late 1970s. The Ed Hillary signature is on a white place setting card that is tipped-in. I had searched to find a card like this and found it at a stationery shop in Chicago.

The next day Ed Hillary signed it when we met in the Helmsley Palace Hotel New York in the 1990s. Hillary was traveling with Norbu Tenzing (Tenzing's son who lives in America), and when I called him on a cell phone from Chicago to finalize plans, he said to me, ''Mike, I can't talk right now. We are in Atlanta meeting with Jimmy Carter! See you tomorrow.''

New Delhi, Vikas, 1977, 1st Indian edition. 184 pp, 26 b/w and 15 color photos, 2 maps. Green hardcover with dust jacket. The dust jacket has two small chips, otherwise bright and clean, with no other flaws in the book or dust jacket. Book and Dust Jacket are in Fine condition.

This Vikas edition of After Everest actually says ''Printed in Great Britain.'' It was printed on the same press as the Allen and Unwin UK edition, using the same paper and binding.  Only the dust jacket is different. It is not one of those poorly printed books from India that we used to see.

Most books get signed in book stores when the author is on tour to promote his book. Tenzing did not do that as English was not his first language, nor had he ever spoken before an audience. Also, he was the first Asian of common birth to become world famous and have written a book. The whole experience was alien to his culture. Also, he was not yet accepted as an equal by western society. Not by the class conscious Brits anyway, the Swiss treated him as an equal.

Tenzing was a strong climber who was well acclimatized to altitude and could have climbed Everest years before he did it with Hillary. He and the Swiss Raymond Lambert reached the Everest South Summit at 26,575 feet in 1952. They turned back as Lambert was spent.

From what we have seen over the last hundred years of the ability of Sherpas to climb to 8000 meters and be nearly unaffected by the thin air, a well acclimatized Nepali could have climbed Everest before 1953 if the western climbers had invited them to.

Tenzing's other son Jamling has written of his father, ''Born in Tibet, raised in Nepal, and a resident of India since the age of nineteen, he had become a symbol of hope and inspiration for millions of caste-bound Indians, poverty-stricken Nepalese, and politically oppressed Tibetans, all of whom regard him as a countryman."

This is the second autobiography of the Sherpa climber who accompanied Sir Edmund Hillary on the 1953 British Expedition to the Everest summit. Born in Tibet around 1914 Tenzing had the ambition to reach the summit of Everest. He was a part of all three British expeditions in 1935, 1936 and 1938, and on the 1952 Swiss expedition that reached the South Summit with Raymond Lambert.

By 1953 he had probably spent more time on Everest than any other human being. In After Everest Tenzing talks about his life and sudden celebrity after the Everest climb and his travels around the world. As field director of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute for over 20 years he helped train many future climbers.

Tenzing became a resident of India with a house in Darjeeling with his wife and children. He had 3 sons and several daughters, one of whom reached the summit of Everest in 1996. Tenzing Norgay died in 1986. The book has many illustrations of the author on his travels, in the mountains, the medals he was awarded, his family and much more.

I (Michael Chessler) believe Tenzing's Signature to be the most important of any twentieth century climber. He was the soul of the 1953 expedition, and from the details revealed in the biography by Ed Douglas, Tenzing, Hero Of Everest, the 1953 British team would probably never have summited if Tenzing had not been there because of his leadership of the Sherpas and the example he set for them, and not just because of his superior high altitude climbing ability.
