Our copies are SIGNED by Silvo Karo on the title page. Climbing in each of the world's Mountain Ranges has a Golden Age, when the highest peaks are climbed, usually by the easiest and safest route. The harder routes are then next, and this is called the Silver Age. We are now in the Silver Age on most of the world's mountains, except for the Alps and most of North America where climbing had a half to full century head start. To live in that Silver Age you need expert and brave climbers, hard men (and now women too), who have found their metier by risking it all to live life at the fullest. Slovenia seems to have more of the great Silver Age climbers than a country of only 2 million has a right to. This is also true of other Eastern European countries such as Poland, for whom the 20th century was not a fun time. But one thing that Slovenians and her neighbors do have is a culture that breeds people who have only themselves to rely on, and who are exceeding the accomplishments of western Europeans who enjoyed the Golden Ages in the Alps, America and the 8000m Peaks of the Himalaya. That is where Silvo Karo comes from, and who he is. For forty years he has been at the top of the game, putting in extreme routes in the Julian Alps; Patagonia; the Indian Himalaya; the Dolomites; Karakoram; Greenland; and speed ascents in Yosemite. Until now the best known Slovenian climber, to Americans, was Tomaz Humar. He climbed in the Himalaya and the Alps. Silvo has been at the top all this time, and his climbs have been documented in the AAJ and in climbing magazines and websites. Bernadette McDonald his written books about them as well. It takes three pages in this book to list Silvo's most notable climbs. This book came out in 2018 as Alpinist in Europe and was very well received. We are using the original title as it is better than the new one.
