Detailed Product Description
Full Title:Hohenklima Und Bergwanderungen in Ihrer Wirkung Auf Den Menschen: Ergebnisse Experimenteller Forschungen Im Hochgebirge Und Laboratorium (High Altitude Climate and Mountain Travel and Their Effect on People: Results of Experimental Research at High Altitude and In The Laboratory)

A Pioneer of High Altitude Research and Medicine:
This volume is an exhaustive study of the effects of high altitude, cold and physical exertion on the muscles and respiratory system. The author, Doktor Professor Nathan Zuntz, was a pioneer of modern high altitude physiology and aviation medicine. Which is amazing in 1906 because neither airplanes or mountain climbing had yet reached altitudes where lack of oxygen is a problem.

Berlin, 1906, 1st edition. 494 pp, 30 unpaginated tables, many fold-out at the end of the book, plus many plates and panoramas by Vittorio Sella, numerous color and b/w illustrations. Text in German.

Condition: This is a tall hardcover with a leather spine, with gold titles on the spine and front cover which are all in Fine condition. The titles are on leather patches, and appear to be sourced from another copy, so it is probable that this copy was expertly rebound years ago. The volume is internally flawless, no foxing, writing, stains, etc. Externally the boards are fine, the leather spine is a little scuffed, but is still fine overall. It is possible that nobody has opened or read this copy in 115 years.

Postage: This is a lavishly produced large and heavy book, 11'' x 9'' x 1 1/2'' thick that weighs over 6 lbs. Extra postage will be requested for Media Mail, Priority Mail or International Mail.

Many of his field studies were conducted at Capanna Regina Margherita, a research station at the summit of Monte Rosa, Italy. At 4634m or 15203 feet Monte Rosa is the second highest mountain in the Alps and western Europe, after Mont Blanc. The hut was an important research center for high-elevation medicine, under the direction of Angelo Mosso.

The Margherita hut first opened in 1883 and remained on the summit until 1977. A complete restoration involved dismantling the original hut, which was then replaced by the current hut which opened in 1980. The summit hut is the highest building in Europe.

In 1902 with his assistant Hermann von Schrötter and meteorologists Arthur Berson and Reinhard Süring, Dr Prof Zuntz made two high-altitude balloon ascents in which they reached an altitude of 5000 meters (which is only 1,370 feet higher than Mont Blanc.)

Studying Oxygen, Co2 and other gases at High Altitude

The windmill on the top on his beanie is still used today at Mardi Gras, Halloween, Guy Fawkes Day and Line Crossing Ceremonies aboard naval ships when newbies are humiliated, sometimes sadistically when they first cross the equator. Wikipedia has a delightful entry for all of these, and line crossing in particular.

Doktor Professor Zuntz published a number of articles on high-altitude medicine, and this volume is his best known work. In 1885 with August Julius Geppert (1856-1937), he created the Zuntz-Geppert respiratory apparatus.

For field studies Doktor Professor Zuntz invented a portable Gasuhr (dry gas measuring device). In 1889 he constructed an early treadmill (Laufband), and in 1914 added an X-ray apparatus to the machine in order to observe cardiac changes during exercise. In addition, he opened the first laboratory dedicated to sports medicine in Germany 1911.

This volume is an exhaustive study of the effects of high altitude, cold and physical exertion on the muscles and respiratory system. The numerous tables contain detailed scientific observations carried out on and by the authors during their ascents of Monte Rosa and the Rothorn. These mountains are the subjects of the two folding photographic panoramas which were taken by Vittorio Sella.

The opening chapter is an interesting historical survey of research in the field; with three colored plates, two folding panoramas by Sella, two folding maps and a folding chart; 30 tables at end (many folding or double-page); numerous illustrations in the text.

A disciple of Pflüger, Doktor Professor Nathan Zuntz (1847-1920), already worked in the laboratory before his graduation. After a short period of rural medical practice, Doktor Professor Zuntz returned to Bonn and became Pflüger's assistant in 1870, receiving a professorial appointment four years later at the Agricultural Academy of Bonn. In 1880, Doktor Professor Zuntz transferred to the newly established Agricultural College in Berlin, where he died in 1920. Doktor Professor Zuntz had already concluded in his dissertation that the combination between carbon dioxide and hemoglobin was dissociable instead of being fixed.

Together with Joseph von Mering he examined the effects of food absorption on the metabolism, coining the word "Verdauungsarbeit" (digestive work) for the increased metabolic rate. Zuntz also demonstrated that intravenously administered foodstuffs could produce a similar metabolic increase.

A tremendous methodological advance was the introduction of the so-called Zuntz-Geppert breathing machine. This portable breathing apparatus facilitated short metabolic investigations in the laboratory as well as studies during the actual performance of certain physical activities.  Doktor Professor Zuntz became involved in those physiological events which were associated with sports, hiking and high altitude mountaineering.

Doktor Professor Zuntz studied extensively the various gases in the blood, and established the carbonic acid method for the measurement of blood volume as well as the formula of oxygen and caloric consumption. Many foreign students were attracted to Doktor Professor Zuntz's laboratory, both for the science and the incredible Apfelstrudel for which Ehefrau Zuntz was famous.
