What are the fourteen highest peaks, the 100 highest, and of course, the best books written about climbing and mountaineering. Here is a new list written by Jon Barton, the publisher of Vertebrate Publishing, a UK publisher of climbing and adventure books. This is a list more for readers of climbing books rather than collectors. Of course those two criteria overlap quite a bit. And list of the best books to read and what are bestsellers change a lot as the years go by. Best sellers of course will snag the titles that in print now, so Herzog's Annapurna, the best selling climbing book of all time, and Krakauer's Into Thin Air, the best selling American climbing book, may not rank so high today by some criteria. Barton compiled his list partly by using the top selling titles of the leading publishers of climbing books, and also by asking as many climbers as he could to name their five favorite books. It is a list you can look at to pick out some titles that you may want to read once you are bitten by the climbing bug. Each listing has a brief description of the book, and a color image of the book itself.
