THIS ITEM IS SOLD BUT WE LEFT IT ACTIVE AS WE FOUND IT SO INTERESTING. AN EXPEDITION SUPPLIER IN PORTLAND RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES! Portland OR, c. 1927. 16 pp (numbered in half pages to 24 pp). Many photos and illustrations. Sheets of paper 15'' x 9'' fold in half, then half again to 4'' x 9''. Black and white on a heavy semi glossy stock gives good photo resolution, and has survived very well. Very Fine condition, almost like New. Beebe and Company was, and still is, an outfitter in Portland Oregon who has changed their emphasis over the years. Originally a ship, sailor and boat supplier, they became more of an LL Bean type clothing company, similar also to an early Eddie Bauer and the Alaska Sleeping Bag Company. In the 1920s they developed an interest in supplying the numbers of people who, using their new automobiles, were going into the Cascades to hike, camp, climb, fish and hunt. They are still in business today, with more of a Sharper Image merchandise outlook. However in the late 1920s they stocked a good assortment of the real thing: Swiss Ice Axes and leather head sheaths, Alpenstocks in ash or hickory ($1.50 to $4), crampons and a crampon case, tricouni nails, down or wool sleeping bags, lightweight tents, Justrite carbide lamps, and Bergans Rucksacks "adopted by the Mt Everest Expeditions in 1922 and 1924." The booklet is in such fine condition at first I thought it was a modern facsimile. A rubber stamp mark on the front though tells the story, it spent its life in the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley. So it has probably has had very few owners, and has never been in a used pamphlet box in a used book store. There is no date on the pamphlet. However, by a close reading I can see it is from the late 1920s. It refers to the 1922 & 1924 Everest expeditions, and also quotes references from several noted explorers and naturalists. They also quote Louis A. Fuertes, an ornithologist who died in 1927. The cover photo looks just like the Sierra Club Basecamp trips into the Sierra in that era.
