Vintage CURVER Ice Axe - 20" shaft. (Snowdon Mouldings) 70's Classic. This is a very rare and important piece of equipment in the evolution of technical ice climbing equipment. The famed Curver Ice Axe was one of the first axes that had a sharply curved pick. This is a very rare item in the USA as these axes were never imported, although the Joe Brown helmets were. The Curver ice axe has a shaft made of fiberglass, with a bulged hand grip. The fiberglass appears to have been painted in various colors which were applied layers, and during use the outside black color wore off and red and white under layers show through. It originally was taped, but that is the first thing to be replaced. The axe stands 19'' high, the head is 10'' long. The weight is 28 ounces. The axe head has one hole in middle for a carabiner or leash. It has a fluted edged adze, and serrations on the pick. The adze appears to have been sharpened but not the beak or pick. There is pointed spike on ferrule which also is not sharp. Despite the appearance of the handle, the axe is in excellent condition. This design was twenty years ahead of its time, until extreme ice climbing finally became a popular sport, with many participants climbing at a high level, due in part to their well designed gear such as this early ice axe. From the small Llanberis factory run by Mo Antoine and Joe Brown that produced the iconic Joe Brown helmet and Limpet tent. Joe Brown and Mo Antoine revolutionized a range of climbing equipment from their base in Llanberis, developing the iconic Joe Brown helmet as well as the Curver ice axe. This was so popular that Mo had to turn down a huge order from a Japanese distributor representing 2,500 stores.
