New York, Longmans, 1925, 1st US edition. 372 pp, 8 color plates, 24 b/w, map. (The US edition was printed in England on the same plates as the UK edition.) Large format navy hardcover with gilt titles. Book has wear to top and bottom of spine and scuffs on front cover. Very Good condition. The official story of the third Everest expedition, the 1924 British attempt on Mount Everest from the North Col that may have put Mallory and Irvine on the summit, and from which they failed to return. This is a heavy, large format book. Extra postage may be requested for Priority Mail or International Mail. The official account of the third Mount Everest expedition, during which Mallory and Irvine died during their summit climb. The book contains contributions from Norton himself, Bruce, Beetham, and Odell, who offers an account of Mallory and Irvine's fateful attempt. The inclusion of Mallory's letters to his wife, written during the expedition, brings a personal touch to the story unveiled in these pages. Edward Norton was the leader of the third British expedition to attempt to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. George Leigh Mallory was the climbing leader and was on both previous British expeditions in 1921 and 1922, the expedition made an ascent to over 28,000 feet without using the oxygen bottles they had brought with them. At this point, Mallory decided that the summit could only be reached with the aid of oxygen. He and Andrew Sandy Irvine went on alone, never to be seen alive again. Although Mallory's body was recovered from Mt. Everest in 1999, it is still unknown whether or not he and Irvine ever reached the summit. Norton's narrative remains a critical primary source for this historic expedition.
