Excellent Matterhorn history on the hundredth anniversary of the first ascent. This is a succinct history of the first one hundred years of Matterhorn ascents, beginning with Whymper's early attempts, his first ascent and the tragedy on the descent. Other notable ascents recounted are the first ascent by a woman (Lucy Walker, 1871), first ascents of the Zmutt, Mummery and Furggen ridges, that of the North Face and the first winter ascent of the North Face (Hilti von Allmen and Paul Etter, 1962).
