This book's chapters include Cultural Attitudes to the Old; Loja, and the Search for the Centenarians; The Environment of Vilcabamba; First Investigations; Life in the Villages and Mountains; The Attitude of the Communities to the Centenarians; and more. In the remote Andean highlands there exist communities of people who may live for 140 years or more, while at the same time remaining agile and lucid. Death from cancer or heart disease in these communities is unknown. Dr. Davies, who has spent a good deal of time living among these people, discusses his findings in this fascinating account. He describes the villages in which these supercentenarians are found, their geography, climate and geology and their common features. Daily routine, diet and health are investigated carefully. The author tells us of family structures, attitudes to sex, writes of how the life of the supercentenarians differs from that of their grandchildren, and considers the influences of the twentieth century. Running through this is the pursuit of the possible causes for the pattern of longevity.
