LIFE MAGAZINE OCTOBER 11, 1954. This was THE major magazine article about the Italian first ascent of K2 in 1954. The 1954 Italian Karakoram expedition succeeded in making the first ascent of K2 via the Abruzzi Spur on 31 July 1954. The expedition was led by Ardito Desio, and the two climbers who reached the summit were Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni. At the time Life was one of the largest circulation magazines in America, and had an influence on the public as great as the TV show 60 Minutes or Jay Leno had today. It was entertainment and news, with great photos, and everybody read it. The article covers the climb only, although the pictures show the tumult as they arrived in villages and Kathmandu on the way out. Many of the later iconic photos from the climb are included in the issue. Both color and b/w photos are included. The entire issue is present. The magazine is in Near Fine to Fine condition. It would look terrific framed on a wall, or protected in a sleeve.
