Boston, 1872, 1st edition. 292 pp. Original brown cloth is bright with the exception of faded spine. Was in a library but has minimal marks. No exterior marks, just a bookplate on the FEP and the library name written on a spare page prior to the title page. No external marks, no spine mark, no pockets, etc. Some foxing, but almost no edge wear. Very Good condition overall. THE classic of American mountaineering, and the first book written in America on American mountaineering. After 150 years it still makes a good read. King, Whitney and others made many first ascents in the Sierra Nevada and produced the first accurate survey of the range. A bona-fide classic, Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada is still exciting reading. It describes the perils and pleasures experienced by Clarence King (1842�1901) while conducting the first geological survey of California in the 1860s, as a part of the Whitney Survey. His language was equal to the marvels he found, and here with unfading brilliance are his accounts of scaling such mountains as Tyndall, Shasta, and Whitney. The chapters on the Yosemite Valley and surrounding High Sierras were written while he was surveying the boundaries of a newly designated national park. There are also delightful vignettes of western characters, including a Sierra artist and a family of Pike County hog farmers.
