London, T. Nelson, 1883, 1st edition. 415 pp, 33 illustrations. The book is bound in a tan with a reddish hue, perhaps burnt Sienna. The original ckith binding is in remarkably Fine condition, with no wear, stains, discoloration of any kind. The cover and spine have wonderful Victorian era illustrations, rendered in gold and black, of climbers ascending an impossibly pointy peak that has a flag on top. The spine and cover titles are in gold or black on a gold background, and are as bright and clean as when they left the bindery 137 years ago. Internally the pages have light foxing on the endpapers, the book is very clean. When this book is on a shelf, it is a peacock that pushes all the others aside. Other than a neatly written previous owner's name, there are no marks on the book. The condition is Very Fine, and we are putting a price on it that is commensurate with its condition being so far above the others we see available on the websites of other online booksellers. The book is designed to make you smile at how beautiful an book can be made. In the 1880s this title was often used as a school prize in those famous English boarding schools, given to the best scholars. This copy has been spared the ignominy. The book is a collection of 16 chapters, each devoted to a special climb or peak that is above the average. In this period climbers were first starting to venture into mountains beyond the Alps, such as Norway, Pyrenees, Caucasus, Andes, Himalaya in India and the Karakoram, Everest and Kanchenjunga were visible from places in India, Hawaii, Greece, and other remote areas. In the 19th century the sea voyage was more dangerous than the mountain to be climbed in some far off land. The voyage and the people were fully half the excitement of visiting foreign lands with their savage and inferior natives. That is why England was eventually kicked out of their world spanning empire. Climbing was still young in 1883. It had just become popular within the lifetime of every adult climber. It was as fresh then as the 1980s are to us now. This is book that can be enjoyed for the simple tactile pleasure of admiring and handling something that demonstrates the art of book making, already at its epitome, that nothing today can even approach.
