London, 1938, 1st edition. 299 pp, 36 plates, 3 maps, one color fold-out map, drawings by Bip Pares, appendices. A true classic of Himalayan exploration. Eric Shipton and H.W. Tilman, with a very small and inexpensively provisioned party, mapped, explored and climbed in the Shaksgam region north of the Karakoram in 1937. One of the most desirable of Himalayan books. [Neate S58.] This copy is SIGNED ''Best wishes from Eric Shipton'' on the front free endpaper with no personalization. We have had copies of this book with the rare dust jacket before, but cannot recall ever having a signed copy! Some collectors consider a dust jacketed copy of Blank on the Map a holy grail of mountaineering book collecting. 1938 was not a great year for flammable objects like books in London, and not many copies have survived. The book is in Fine condition with the slightest corner rubbing. Best of all, this copy includes the scarce dust jacket. The dust jacket is not soiled or worn, but has some chipping at the top and bottom of the spine, and all the titles are complete and bright. It looks great! Bill Tilman and Eric Shipton organized an expedition in order to explore some of the highest glaciers of the world and unclimbed peaks of the Shaksgam region north of the Karakoram. They left from Rawalpindi, at the time in India, and went through the Karakoram by the Sarpo Lago pass 5684m. In the next five months, they explored 2230 sq miles of territory which Tom Longstaff qualified as being ''the mountain fortress most difficult on earth.'' They reached the foot of the impressive north side of K2 and made a detailed map of the Chinese Turkestan, today Sinkiang or Xinjiang. This expedition, on the heels of their exploration of the untrodden Nanda Devi sanctuary, cemented their reputation for being mountain explorers of the first rank. Eric Shipton, who knew the lovely landscapes of the Asian mountains, was thrilled with the Trango glacier and exclaimed ''Enormous columns of granite carried these elegant summits, so far away and out of reach, they didn't seem to be part of the colossal structures. The sides of these mountains, covered with ice and soft snow, shine like millions of diamonds in the morning sun.'' When Bill Tilman explored the Snow Lake at the bottom of the Hispar glacier in 1937, he noticed footsteps that he thought those of a Yeti. At the end of this expedition, Eric Shipman wrote a best seller: Blank on the Map. He became fascinated by this region of the world which, according to him, was the most fantastic mountain area on earth. The rear flap is fine but my scanner is not long enough to show it.
