The two voyages to the Southern ocean described in this book were not regarded as a success by Tilman. The latter voyage in 1966-7 to the ice-encrusted islands hidden in the tempestuous seas south of Cape Horn, was unhappy and disastrous with the loss overboard of the first mate and constant tension among the crew.
The other voyage included in this volume is a voyage Tilman undertook in Mischief round Africa ten years previously. The author writes in his customary terse and gripping style but says in the preface that for him it was like 'turning a knife in the wound'.
