Shown below is Sir Edmund Hillary signing a first issue $5 bill for Chessler Books in Los Angeles in 1992. The guy in jeans is Michael Chessler. How we got our New Zealand $5 bills signed by Sir Edmund Hillary We were fortunate to have met with Sir Edmund Hillary many times in the 1990s and 2000s. Being booksellers, we normally asked him to autograph books by and about him. But we also brought along some other goodies. New Zealand is one of the few countries that has honored a private living citizen by putting his image on their currency. In the 1990s Hillary traveled a lot, fund raising for his Foundation that improved the lives of his beloved Sherpas. When we found out about the NZ $5 bill, just before a scheduled meeting in Los Angeles with Sir Ed, we were able to find some uncirculated, early printed, original NZ $5 bills. The serial numbers started with A, and most of our bills were A and B series. Sir Edmund Hillary signed over 100 $5 bills for us from 1992 to 1999. As of October 2018 we have only a few left. The paper bill showing Sir Edmund Hillary was issued only from 1992 to 1997. Since then a plastic polymer was used for all denominations to preclude counterfeiting. Recently a new design for their $5 bill has been issued, with Sir Ed's image still prominent. We are old fashioned, so we rarely asked Ed to sign polymer bills, only using uncirculated paper bills for autographing. At first we met Sir Ed only in the USA and Canada. After he turned 80 years old, we met with him only in New Zealand. Therefore the bills Ed signed for us were all signed twenty-six years ago. We have never seen any offered for sale except the ones he signed for us. If you ever wanted this special commemorative of the life of a great man, this may be your last chance. This is a pair of two brand new, uncirculated, original style New Zealand $5 bills, issued in 1992, that shows the image of Sir Edmund Hillary on the front. It is Signed by Ed Hillary in blue ink, and is an original style paper bill, not the new polymer counterfeit proof bill.
