Full title: Travels in the Central Caucasus and Bashan, including Visits to Ararat and Tabreez and Ascents of Kazbek and Elbruz London, Longmans, Green, and Co., 1869, 1st edition. 8 x 5 inches; xiii, 509 pp, 3 folding lithographed maps with hand-color in outline, chromolithographed frontispiece, engraved plates, and in-text illustrations. Original green cloth hardcover with gold spine lettering and gold image on the cover. Virtually no edge wear, no foxing, binding is tight, some pages uncut (unopened.) Possibly rebacked using original spine, and new endpapers. Near Fine. This is one of the books on the first ascent of Elbrus, now regarded as the highest peak in Europe, one of the seven summits. Douglas William Freshfield (April 27, 1845 February 9, 1934) was a British lawyer, mountaineer and author, who edited the Alpine Journal from 1872 to 1880. He was an active member of the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club and served as President of both organizations. While still a schoolboy he had ascended Mont Blanc, and in the 1860s and 1870s made at least twenty first ascents, chiefly in the Italian Alps. Freshfield led an exploration of the Caucasus and was the first man, officially, to conquer Kazbek (5047m) with guides from the village Gergeti. This is an account of the exploration of the central Caucasus that Freshfield led in 1868, at a time when the region was largely unknown and dangerous. He made the first ascent of Mounts Kazbek (16546 ft), Elbruz (18470 ft), as well as several other peaks. After returning to the Caucasus in 1887, he later published 'The Exploration of the Caucasus' (1896).
