Cleveland, World Publishing, 1961, 1st edition or 2nd printing. 441 pp, b/w photos, mapped end papers. Turquoise cloth hardcover with silver titles, navy decoration and no dust jacket. Book may have partial dust jacket tucked inside and missing half title page. Very Good to Near Fine condition overall. This book describes the Danes, Peter Freuchen and Knud Rasmussen, and their life with the Polar or Thule Eskimos in Greenland from 1910 to 1921 in the very early days of contact. Freuchen was married to an Inuit woman for ten years. There is a photo of them with their two children in this book. His book was the basis for a film made in 1933. This interesting man was also involved with the Danish resistance movement during World War II. There are chapters on Crime and Punishment, Art and Music, the Eskimo Idea of the World and Marriage and Courtship. An nice copy of this somewhat dated examination of Eskimo life - charming.
