Washington: Carnegie Institute of Washington, 1907, 1st edition. Volume 1 of a 3-volume set. Part 1 - 391 pp, Part 2 - 186 pp. Illustrated throughout with b/w and a few color plates, diagrams, and maps (some foldout). Large format grey hardcover rigid boards and linen spine in Fine condition. This is a heavy, large format book. Extra postage will be requested for Priority Mail, International Mail and Media Mail. The two parts comprising Volume One of the set are Part One: Descriptive Topography and Geology by Willis, Blackwelder and Sargent , and Part Two: Petrography and Zoology by Eliot Blackwelder along with a Syllabary of Chinese Sounds by Friedrich Hirth. To clarify, there are two books that comprise Volume One, bound together. This is one of the major topographical and geological monographs on China The Carnegie Expedition to China was conceived by Charles Walcott, who was to describe the rich Cambrian faunas. These results include the description and illustration of numerous fossils, among which the trilobites stand out. The zoological part of Volume 1 by Eliot Blackwelder is restricted to vertebrates, mainly birds. It contains six fine, full colour plates and includes the description and illustration of a new subspecies of wren. Smaller sections are devoted to the herpetology, and the Mammalia. Collected beetles were mentioned but supposed to be described elsewhere. A chapter on Syllabary for the transcription of Chinese sounds in the dialect of Peking modified for literary purposes (18 pp.) is by Friedrich Hirth.
