Handmade. 1932. 81 pp, hundreds of b/w photos and illustrations, with one in color. Large foldout "New Zealand Four-Mile Sheet" map of the Southern Alps in back of book. Very large format hardcover album with cloth covered boards, leather spine and corners, and gilt titles on cover. (~ 13.5 x 22 inches) Very Good condition overall. Handmade photo album by B.R. Goodfellow contains photos from an excursion that took place from November 20 - December 7, 1932 and another section entitled The Southern Alps of New Zealand For 1934 Rucksack Club Journal. B.R. Goodfellow is Basil Robertson Goodfellow (1902-1972), an English climber who was a prominent member of The Alpine Club and The Rucksack Club. Goodfellow's climbing career spanned several decades, including experience in the Alps (particularly Zermatt), the British hills (especially Snowdonia), and even beyond to areas like the Pyrenees, Turkey, Lofoten Islands, New Zealand Alps, Canadian Rockies, and the Himalayas. Himalayan Ventures: Goodfellow undertook three Himalayan excursions, including trips to Sikkim, Garhwal, and the Annapurna region of Nepal (1953), savouring the experience of traveling through the valleys, forests, and interacting with the local people. There is a short mention of Goodfellow, a British Climber, in Wikipedia: Nanda Ghunti is a 6,309-metre-high (20,699 ft) mountain in Garhwal, India. It lies on the outer rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. The mountain was first surveyed by T. G. Longstaff in 1907. Eric Shipton surveyed it from the west in 1931. The first serious attempt to reach the summit was made by B. R. Goodfellow and J. Buzzard (UK) in 1944. Finally, a Swiss team under Andr� Roch made the first ascent in 1947 via the east ridge. This is a heavy, large format book. Extra postage will be requested for Priority Mail and International Mail. The 1932 trip section includes numerous photos of the New Zealand Alps and includes a delightful series of photos with the caption, " ....explored a huge 'moulin', and found a chamois trapped... cut down to him and made steps for him to get out.' A chamois is an antelope type goat native to European and New Zealand Alps. This section also includes a panorama of the chief peaks along the main divide of southern New Zealand Alps in Dec. 1932, and photos of the participants of the adventure. The second section is a written and photographic presentation of the southern alps for the Rucksack Club Journal, and includes photos of Mt. Cook, the Tasman Glacier and the Hermitage along with cutout images from a publication, one of which is Mt. Cook from the Hermitage in color.
