London, Richard Bentley and Sons, 1847. 499 pp. Handsome half maroon leather over marbled boards and raised band spine with gilt decoration and titles, marbled end papers. Near Fine condition overall, especially given the age (177 years old!) This book is worth having just for the lovely binding! The author, Albert Smith, is the man who climbed Mont Blanc and did a live presentation in London for several years. His climb and program had two effects. Smith got rich. And The British went berserk over climbing. In the next 15 years the Alpine Club was founded, many books were written and sold, as was the Alpine Journal, and every major peak in the Alps had at least ona first ascent and one route. The Wikipedia entry for Albert Smith has this to say about this book: Smith was a regular contributor to Richard Bentley's Miscellany, in whose pages his first and best book, the novel The Adventures of Mr Ledbury, appeared in 1842. The fictional adventures of Mr. Ledbury and his friend Jack Johnson. Includes a small amount of Alpine climbing and crossing passes. This appears to have been a best seller, as we have had it in other formats and bindings. Excerpt from The Adventures of Mr. Ledbury and His Friend Jack Johnson: "Mr. Ledbury was on terms of intimate acquaintance with Jack Johnson, although the two were as different in their dispositions as a bottle of champagne and a tin of Devonshire cream, and they always enjoyed a little conversation when they met, Mr. Ledbury usually commencing by a few mild meteorological observations, which Jack Johnson generally replied to by asking his opinion of things in general, and the Romans in particular - questions, it must be admitted, certainly involving much theory and ingenious speculation."
