London, 1966, first edition. 224 pp, with 28 photographs by the author's brother, a map of southern Turkey, plus index and author's note on orthography and pronunciation of Turkish. Rust cloth hardcover with chipped dust jacket. With the exception of bit of foxing, the book is in fine condition. Near Fine overall. Travels along the southern shore of Turkey from Marmaris to Mersin - through the remnants of the ancient civilizations of Caria, Lycia, Pamphylia, Cilicia. From the dust jacket: 'The Mediterranean coast of Turkey is a region of quite exceptional natural beauty. It is also rich in historical remains. Greeks, Romans, Seljuks and Crusaders have all left their mark. The author, who speaks Turkish fluently, wanted to see southern Turkey before the Government carried out their plans to develop it for tourists, and this book is an account of his travels. It is essentially about the present: about the land as it is today and the people who live in it, but there is a strong awareness of past events and personalities. Travelling by indigenous transport, bus, dolmus and donkey, and staying in Third Class hotels by preference, he talked to people along the coast from Marmaris to Mersin and also made a detour through the Taurus Mountains to the old Seljuk capital of Konya. Fortunately the Turks are appreciative of the natural beauty of their country and it is unlikely that they will let tourism ruin it for those who are prepared to go in search of peace and unspoilt scenery.' Illustrated dust jacket designed by Edward Ripley based on a photograph by the author's brother. Michael Pereira, soldier turned writer, exemplifies good travel writing. This unpretentious book, describing his travels from Marmaris to Mersin with a detour to the old Seljuk capital of Konya, is wonderfully evocative of an innocent Turkey on the brink of the mass tourism invasion. Transport by bus, dolmus and donkey and staying in third class hotels is hardly attractive to modern travelers, but in reading these pages you sense you are meeting the real Turkey - a Turkey of a religious, courteous and hospitable people living sometimes in areas of outstanding beauty. Pereira weaves appropriate historical references into the text but with a light touch, so that the appetite is whetted rather than dulled. A lovely book for anybody wanting to know the ancient ways of Turkey.
