UK, c. 1946. 12 pp. A most unusual and undistinguished Alpine item. A 12 page essay, a memoir of a trip to the Alps by Dorothy Pilley about her first return to the Alps after World War 2. She reminisces about her past adventures, but mostly talks about her anticipation of a new climbing season, and waiting for the peaks to "get in shape." There are no date of publication mentioned, but she says the Alps have been closed for seven years. So, it was in 1946 or 1947. No English climbers are around, as in 1946 they were all too poor or too dead. She mentions that she thought the Swiss would be avoiding the Alps, after fortifying it during the war, but to her surprise they all up in the huts and are partying. She also mentions Andre Roch, "who is to be in charge of the Swiss expedition next year to K2." Maybe somebody can date this pamphlet from that. I wonder if that trip turned into Everest 1952. I remember that the Swiss did go to the Himalaya right after the war, as they and the French were the only western non-combatants, plus the Swiss could afford to go, as they made a lot of money during the war. I will try to look that up, where the Swiss did go in the late 1940s. She welcomes all the new cairned trails the Swiss built during the war, and new huts [and fortifications], saying people will enjoy them for centuries, which is true. The booklet is in perfectly new condition, with a plain gray wrapper like journal reprints. A RSM in the rear cover says "PRINTED IN GREAT BRITAIN."
