London, Murray, 1905, 1st UK edition. 294 pp, 20 photos, 1 color fold-out map, index. TEG. Mountain exploration on the Sino-Russian frontier. The author was a German climber and explorer, active in the Dolomites, Caucasus and ranges of central Asia. [Neate M.85.] This extremely rare book (we have had perhaps three copies in thirty years) is in its original blue cloth, with bright gold letters on the spine and cover. It has light edge wear; map is tape repaired; overall, book is in VG or Near Fine condition. In 1878, with the guides Cesare and Santo Tom� Siorpaes, Merzbacher made the first ascent of Mount Schiara. On June 16, 1881, with Peter Soyer, he made the first ascent of the Totenkirchl in the Wilder Kaiser, one of the most famous mountains in the Alps. In 1884 he retired from professional life and traveled extensively in Persia, Kashmir, Ceylon, the Caucasus and the mountains of Central Asia. After he sold his lucrative business in 1888, he devoted his life entirely to alpinism. In 1891 as part of a Caucasus expedition with Ludwig Purtscheller, he participated in the ascent of Elbrus and other mountains. Merzbacher had a considerable share in the development of climbing in the Alps, the Caucasus and the Tian-Shan mountains. In the Western Alps, he climbed Piz Bernina, the Meije and the Matterhorn. In 1901, his two-volume work appeared from the high regions of the Caucasus. In 1901 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Munich, and in 1902 was elected vice-chairman of the Munich Geographical Society. Merzbacher traveled in 1902-1903 in search of the legendary mountain Khan Tengri in the Tian-Shan, Central Asia. This was the primary exploration of the Tian-Shan mountains and the pyramid shaped Khan-Tengri (6995m), which was long considered the highest mountain in the range. Merzbacher unravelled the complex topography of the range and discovered the 36-mile-long Inylchek Glacier. He discovered what is now known as Merzbacher Lake on Ice Lake Inylchek Glacier, which is known and feared for its bursts of flooding. In 2009 a high mountain observatory built on Inylchek glacier was named Research Station Gottfried Merzbacher in his honor.
