Richard Bentley, London, 1848, 1st edition. 512 pp, 33 etchings by John Leech, including a portrait of the author. Handsome old 3/4 leather bound hardcover with marbled paper covered boards and end papers, embossed spine with title block. Foxing and surface wear, but Very Good for its age. An English novel that includes adventures in Switzerland, including 'The Ascent of the Great St. Bernard' and 'Mrs Hamper wishes To Ascend Mont Blanc.' One of several comic novels Smith wrote which were originally issued in parts, and illustrated by Leech. First published in parts, 1846-47, and in book form 1848. The publisher, Bentley, sold the plates upon completion of the serial of Christopher Tadpole and subsequently less expensive cloth issues appeared. Richard Albert Smith (1816-1860) was a novelist, playwright, and showman who qualified first as a surgeon and apothecary, but segued into a writer of semi-fictional pieces for the Medical Times. In 1841 he moved to London and became a journalist, known for his versatility, although his forte always was humor. His first play was produced in 1842, and thereafter he wrote numerous extravaganzas and adapted plays for various theatres. He was, for a time, the dramatic critic for the Illustrated London News. This title is a Dickensian tale of a young boy (the title character), who faces various tests and travails as he travels about England and Europe. John Leech (1817-1864) was an English caricaturist and the most popular comic illustrator of his day. His most famous works are probably the four charming plates illustrating the first edition of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol (1843), and the broadly humorous etchings in the Comic History of England (1847-1848) and the Comic History of Rome (1852).
